March 2024 Club Challenge - Flowers
Author Last Post

I forget the type of wood Danielle said she used, but there is a certain type that is better than others for this.

Jody,

I've always been told NOW is the ideal time to trim trees. The sap is down, so you're supposed to trim it now, before the sap starts flowing again.

I've played with these types of flowers before - and they're equal parts fun & frustrating.  I've also had a few long conversations with Danielle about how to achieve her results - she makes it look super easy. The trick is to use a very green wood.  Does it hurt the tree to trim it in the winter???

Those look real

Here is a photo of some really beautiful flowers turned by Danielle Barbaer who serves on Mid Atlantic Turning Symposium's Board. I took this photo in the Instant Gallery last year.

March’s challenge is to turn flowers. But one is not enough. Three is the magic number, but you can make more if you like. But since floral arrangements contain different types of flowers, yours should as well. If you are really ambitious, you may want to turn a vase or weed pot to hold your flowers. Or you could use the flat sided vase you made for last June’s club challenge.

I've also attached 2 articles on making flowers from AAW's Woodturner magazine.
