November Meeting

Michael Kagan Demonstration

This month’s meeting will feature a demonstration by Michael Kagan of the Bucks Woodturners.  He will show us how to turn & carve a “double spiral” or barley twist stem on a goblet.

Michael began as a wood carver about 25 years ago, and has been turning for about 5 or 6 years.  His background as a carver has led him to add to his turnings with some sort of hand carved or pierced embellishment.

Michael is a member of Bucks Turners and the Pennsylvania Guild of  Craftsmen as well as its Bucks County Chapter.  His work has been chosen for the 2007 Pennsylvania Craft Exhibit at the PA State Museum in Harrisburg.  His work has also been previously exhibited at the PA State Museum and the New England School of Fine Furniture.  He recently won a “best in show” award at the Penn State Carving Show.

Michael has demonstrated at Bucks Turners, the Tylersport Turning & Carving Fair (an excellent small symposium), and is leading the Bucks Turners very successful HOW (hands on workshop) program.

Michael’s Artist Statement:  “I view the turned form as a palette for carving.  Woodturning has evolved in recent years from the more traditional and functional craft to an art form involving turning, carving, piercing, painting, sandblasting, and whatever else someone can dream of.  The possibilities are only limited by imagination.

December Meeting

Planned Program

As you all know, we plan to also feature demonstrations by some of our own talented members, so in December, Mark Anderson will show us a couple of methods for deep hollowing.  Mark has recently studied with David Ellsworth and Lyle Jamison, and will demonstrate both of their methods of deep hollowing, as he owns tools for each.  Mark says these methods of hollowing make it very easy and fearless to do provided you pay attention to the process).

Future Club Programs

Tom Jones will demonstrate miniature turning as well as the making of tiny specialized tools needed for this very small type of work.  The date is yet to be set, but should be early in 2008.

We also want to have one more outside demonstrator for this club year.  The details are not yet set, so if any of you has something or somebody in particular that you want, please let the program committee know (soon so we can arrange).

Remember, we will not have show & tell, challenge presentations, or long business discussions on demo nights.  The demos will start promptly at 7:30.

Member Art Show!

Buren Gilpin and his wife, Christina Sanes, are currently on exhibit at the M. Christina Geis Gallery on the campus of Georgian Court University.

The exhibit, entitled Just the Two of Us is currently running until Friday, November 30, 2007.  This exhibit showcases the wood art of Buren and the landscape and abstract paintings of Christina.

Regular gallery hours are:  Monday – Thursday from 9 AM until 8 PM, and 9 AM to 5 PM on Friday.  Directions:  From Route 9, take 9th Street west almost to the end and turn right into the university.  Follow signs to parking lot A.  The gallery building is adjacent to lot A, and the gallery is on the 2nd floor.

Mark & I have visited the exhibit and we can tell you that the club has not yet seen Burin’s best work, and Christina’s art is REALLY good!

Upcoming Shows & Symposiums

2008 AAW National Symposium will be held in Richmond, VA June 20 - 23, 2008 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.  Demonstrations and programs are not yet set, but will shortly be available on the AAW’s website:

www.woodturner.org

The Woodworking Show for this winter is scheduled for February 15 -17 in the Garden State Expo Center in Somerset.  The show schedule can be found on their website:

www.thewoodworkingshows.com

The show is under new management this year, and they want to try something new called “Strolling Mini Demonstrations” each lasting about 15 minutes or so.  We, the club, have tentatively agreed to participate.  The demos will be simple and will be designed to stimulate interest in turning (and other forms of woodworking given by other groups), thus leading to an increase in our membership.  Sounds like a win-win.  We’ll talk further about this at a meeting before the show.

The Woodturning Center in Philadelphia, PA has scheduled several in-house exhibits for 2007 & 2008.  Our club now holds a membership at the center, which has as its mission the education, preservation and promotion of wood and wood-turned art.  For further information, visit their website at:

www.woodturningcenter.org

Wood Sale!

As a reminder:  U.S. Mahogany Corp. will again hold their 11th annual “Giant Hardwood Sale” Friday & Saturday, November 23rd & 24th.

The Program Committee

Our program committee has been set up for the purpose of planning and arranging meeting programs for the club.   If you have any suggestions for a demonstration, instruction, or anything else, let the committee know.
