Meeting Tomorrow!

Our November meeting will feature Bruce Perlmutter demonstrating the use of Jam Chucks for finishing the bottoms of bowls, as well as for other holding applications…should be very interesting.

A couple things to remember for the meeting:

1.  Don’t forget the challenge to make something using intertwined rings, as is outlined in the fall issue of Woodturning Design Magazine

2.  Think about whether you will participate in the Woodworking Show, scheduled for February 16-18, 2007 in Somerset.  Sign up sheet will be at the meeting

Upcoming Area Events

The Woodworking Show” will be held this year on the weekend of February 16-18 at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset (where they used to have the good ones).  The club decided to participate again, so I am in the process of making arrangements with the show management.  There is no other woodworking show scheduled this season in the area.

NJ Woodturners will have Mike Kehs demonstrating Inside Out Turning at its regular meeting, November 27th.

Our club has Mike scheduled to demonstrate his inside-out turning at the February meeting…put that inyour planner!

Lee Alexander is holding the following small-group woodturning class at his workshop, in Lincroft, NJ. On Saturday, November 18, the topic will be Pod Vases. The session will run from 2:00 to 6:00 PM, and cost $80 each. For more information or to sign up, go to Lee's website: http://www.dreamweaverdesignsinc.comor contact Lee at: (732) 741-0156.

Yankee Woodturners Assn will host their first Symposium June 1-3, 2007 at Wesleyan University in Middletown,CT.    Featured demonstrators scheduled at this time include Mark St Leger, Jean Francois Escoulen, Jimmy Clewes, Bob Rosand, Mark Sfirri, Michael Hosaluk, Johannes Michelsen, Angelo Iafrate, and Beth Ireland.

For your information, the Yankee Woodturners Assn is a consortium of 7 southern New England woodturning clubs.  Their website is www.yankeewoodturningsymposium.org where further information, as well as registration forms and info can be found.  This regional symposium sounds like a really good one!

American Association of Woodworkers

As a Reminder:  Our local club is actually a chapter of the AAW.  All members should also be members of the AAW.  Their dues are $40 per year which includes their magazine “American Woodturner” four times a year.  Some of our club benefits are an insurance policy which is fully funded by the AAW, and a source of activities and information about turning worldwide.

For 2007, members are encouraged to renew on line in the website.  As an incentive for doing so, the AAW will raffle off a new lathe to a member who renews on line only.

The AAW has revised its grant program to require submissions to only be accepted once a year.  The 2007 grant applications will be due in January.  Grants may be submitted individually by AAW members or by AAW chartered local clubs.  For details on AAW grants, see their website:  www.woodturner.org.

For those of us who are AAW members, please let me know if any of your personal information has changed since last year, so the AAW can update for the new 2007 resource book.

For your long range planning, the 2007 AAW Symposium will be held in Portland, OR, June 29 to July 1.

Things To Think About

Jimmy Clewes, a world class turner from the UK, will be touring the US in 2007, so there is an opportunity for our club, alone or with the other clubs in NJ (NJ Woodturners & Cape Atlantic) to host Jimmy for a demonstration.  Mike Cunningham, President of the Cape Atlantic Woodturners, is coordinating the effort.  If there is an interest, please let one of the program committee guys know.

Lyle Jamison, another well-known turner, will be touring this area in May/June of 2007, so if there is any interest in hosting him for a club demo, please let one of the program committee members know.

Comments from the Secretary

In order for our meetings to be more focused on demonstrations, show & tell, and other hands-on activities, most of the information about upcoming events, AAW matters, or other happenings of interest, will be posted only in the newsletter or on the club’s website.  Despite this change, any member who has anything to bring up at any meeting, PLEASE DO SO!  Also, any comments about anything in the newsletter, or on the website ARE WELCOME at the meetings.

The Program Committee

The program committee welcomes suggestions for future meeting (or other?) events. If you have any suggestions for a demonstration, instruction, or anything else, let the committee know.
