November Meeting Presentation

November’s meeting program will be a presentation on “Turned Bowl Design” given by Ron Befferman, President of the Cape Atlantic Woodturners Club of Egg Harbor.

Ron has been “seriously turning” for about the last four or five years, and is now concentrating on segmented bowls.  He will have examples of various good and not-so-good bowl designs, and we are invited to bring in our own examples (good and not so…).

For this meeting, the presentation will be first on the agenda, followed by our regular meeting stuff, so come early.

Dreamworks Design Art Show & Sale

Lee Alexander, one of our members, is showcasing his and his wife Mary’s studio “Dreamworks Design” with their annual home art show and sale this Sunday, November 6 from 1 until 6 PM.  Our members, friends and family are invited.

Mary's beaded jewelry and Lee’s woodturning will be featured. Get some of your holiday shopping done in a no hassle, relaxed atmosphere. It will be an open house, wine and cheese reception and all are welcome.

They are located at 125 Manor Parkway, Lincroft, NJ 07738.  For directions:  http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=125+Manor+Parkway,+Lincroft,+NJ+07738 (just off exit 109 of the GSP…732.741.0156 for further info).

Follow up to Buren’s September Meeting Hollowing Demo

Some of the members expressed interest in the tools which Buren used in his demonstration on deep hollowing, so he has provided us with Al Basham’s (the tool designer) website for further information or purchase:

Most of my tools are on my Web Page: www.albasham.com

1. You can purchase bits from me, send me an E-Mail and I'll send them in an envelope.

2. Take a look at the web Page. I have a good inventory so I can fill orders immediately.

3. I make a Laser Tool that has been very successful.

Thanks ... Al Basham

Thanks, Buren for providing this info.

December Planned Program

For December, our program committee has planned for an “every member participation” to show and demonstrate their home made or improvised methods of holding work on the lathe.

In past meetings, there has been lively discussion on how members held work on the lathe either to hold both sides of a bowl, hold odd shaped pieces, or solve a particular holding problem…so these can be shared by all, let’s bring ‘em in for all to learn!

Classified Section

The newsletter will now have a classified section for buying/selling of woodworking related items.  Here are the guidelines:

  • Woodworking items and tools only
  • Members can list free
  • Non members cost $25 and comes with a free 1 year membership (check to ASWT)
  • Deadline first of month
  • Contact is newsletter editor

The Woodworking Show

This year’s woodworking show will be held December 16 – 18 at the NJ Expo Center, 97 Sunfield Ave, Edison (in Raritan Center).

The club is officially signed up to participate, so we need volunteers to man our booth all three days…the sign up sheet will be at the meeting or call me at 732.920.1915 to get on the list (I’ll need to submit a list of participants to show management, so if you plan to or think you will attend, please let me know).

There’s a four page list or rules, but you need to know:

  • You need to be on the list for each day you attend
  • No commercial activities
  • One person in the booth at all times
  • Members finished work on display is encouraged (small items can be brought in/out during show hours).

Wood of the Month

This month’s wood is Redheart,  a new-to-me wood I found at Albany’s Totally Turning Symposium last month.

Color:  bright red when first cut (turns darker after aging.

Hardness:  very hard and dense

Grain:  usually straight and tight

Workability:  turns well with SHARP tools, otherwise prone to chipping

Finishing:  sands easily and polishes to a shiny luster

Safety:  This wood is very dusty and STINKS when being worked.  I will not work with this wood without adequate ventilation and respiratory protection

Scientific name:  erythroxylon areolatum

Growing range:  Mexico to Argentina

AKA:  chakate kok (coc), Honduras redwood

All members are invited to share in this column.

Local (and not so local) News

Our club participated in this year’s Rotary Club Sailfest in Island Heights on September 10.  The reports are that not too much was sold, but those who were there had a good time.

Three of our members attended the Adirondack Turners “Totally Turning” Symposium in October.  There were excellent demonstrations filling the  Saturday and Sunday schedule (Stuart Batty and Andi Wolfe to name just two).  This is an annual event and well worth the time, so plan now for next year.

American Association of Woodworkers

As a Reminder:  Our local club is actually a chapter of the AAW.  All members should also be members of the AAW.  Their dues are $40 per year which includes their magazine “American Woodturner” four times a year.  Some of our club benefits are an insurance policy which is fully funded by the AAW, and a source of activities and information about turning worldwide.

The Program Committee

The new program committee is up and running, and has our meeting programs set for the rest of this year and has good prospects for next.  Among the prospects (these are now just maybes):  Bob Rosand, Lincoln Seitzman, and our own Lee Alexander.  Lee’s recently back from some turning classes in Utah, and you should see his spectacular thin stemmed goblets which he showed last meeting.  We’ll look forward to his demo, whatever it will be.

Notes from the Editor

We need everyone’s input and participation to make the club be better and grow:

  • Showcase your work (even the mistakes help)
  • Demonstrate at our meetings (everyone has something to offer)
  • Research and/or write an article for the newsletter
  • Suggest programs, demos, topics of interest for us all to benefit
  • Attend our meetings (aside to Bob, your presence is missed).

Elections are coming up in December for 2006 club officers.  We have current openings for VP and the refreshment committee, as well as the regular elections for the rest of the officers of the club.

New book of interest…

“Understanding Wood Finishing : How to Select and Apply the Right Finish” (Hardcover) by Bob Flexner.  This is a completely revised edition (June 2005).  The list is $29.95, but available on Amazon for $19.95

(reminder…Amazon usually ships free for orders over $25 and there’s no tax)
