 Featured Demonstration

We are very fortunate to have William Smith, a well known & world class turner from Doylestown, PA, who will demonstrate “Open Segmented Turning” at our September 11th  meeting. This promises to open our new club year in great fashion!

William, from rural eastern Pennsylvania, is best known for both open and closed segmented turning.  He has been a woodworker for most of his adult life, but has focused on turning since 1994.

What follows is an excerpt from his bio information, which is found on his website:

“I find great appeal in the regimentation and geometrical patterns afforded by segmented construction. I use simple clean shapes in much of my work so as not to detract from these patterns. I am particularly fond of the interplay of light and shadows when viewing my open segmented work under single source lighting. In the last several years I have developed a heightened sense of the natural world around me. Much of my latest work reflects this by the use of organic forms, texturing and non-symmetrical shapes.
Most of my art is not intended to make statements about myself or my world. I focus upon creating objects that are satisfying to hold, view and feel. If you enjoy experiencing my work then I have succeeded.”

William teaches segmented turning workshops and has demonstrated locally and at the regional and national levels.  He has also authored a book “Segmented Wood Turning”

For further information about William, and to see examples of his wonderful work, go to his website at:  http://www.smithart.us

His website also contains an illustrated article detailing how William sets up and makes his pieces as well as downloadable templates for indexing wheels, and a formula for setting gluing stops.

Some Changes in Our Meetings

As mentioned before, our goal is to have as many as three outside demonstrators each year (Sept to June), three member demos, and the rest of the meetings devoted to hands-on sessions.

Also, we will not have show & tell or challenge presentations on demo nights.

One of the most important parts of the “new format” is the hands on sessions.  These will only work if you tell us what you want to know or learn.  We will shortly have tools and equipment on hand, so, with a little notice, someone can help you out.

New Tools & Equipment

Speaking of new tools & equipment, thanks to a $1200 grant from the AAW, we will shortly be ordering turning tools, equipment for our lathe, and instructional books and DVDs for the club library.  The plan is to order the items we need after all of the club officers and interested folks have given their input (maybe within a week after the meeting).  Anyone with an item of interest please see me (soon).

Upcoming Shows & Symposiums

Totally Turning 2007 Symposium will be held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY on October 12-14, 2007.  Program and registration information can be found on their website:

www.totallyturning.com

This year’s list of demonstrators and topics is truly world class:  turners such as Alan Lacer, Kip Christensen, Johannes Michelsen, Keith Tomkins, and Giles Gilson will demonstrate everything from design, deep hollowing, and inlaid boxes to perfect finishing.  A few of our members went last year and gave rave reviews, and this year’s symposium promises to be even better.

2008 AAW National Symposium will be held in Richmond, VA June 20 - 23, 2008 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.  Demonstrations and programs are not yet set, but will shortly be available on the AAW’s website:

www.woodturner.org

The Woodworking Show for this winter is scheduled for February 15 -17 in the Garden State Expo Center in Somerset.  The club needs to decide soon whether to again participate.  As a reminder, last year’s provided us with new members and a good time for all who took part. The show schedule should be set within the next week, and will be found on their website:

www.thewoodworkingshows.com

The Woodturning Center in Philadelphia, PA has scheduled several in-house exhibits for 2007 & 2008.  Our club now holds a membership at the center, which has as its mission the education, preservation and promotion of wood and wood-turned art.  For further information, visit their website at:

www.woodturningcenter.org

Club Shirts

It looks like our club shirts have been a success, since there is a demand for more…I have 5 shirts wanted so far, but we need to order more in amounts of 6 or more.  Let me know if anyone wants a shirt ($17.00 each).

AAW/Local Club Insurance

As you may know, the AAW provides liability insurance for its members and local AAW Chapter clubs, of which ASWT is one. This insurance provides coverage for members (and chapters) who are participating in chapter activities or chapter sponsored activities.

However…club members who are not members of the AAW are NOT COVERED or protected by this policy, even during a club sponsored activity.  Also, club members (AAW members or not) who are participating in private activities are not covered.

Just another benefit of joining AAW.

The Program Committee

Our program committee has been set up for the purpose of planning and arranging meeting programs for the club.   If you have any suggestions for a demonstration, instruction, or anything else, let the committee know.

Also, if any of you wish to help on the committee, come on down!
