April Featured Demonstration

Michael Kehs, a well known & excellent turner from Bucks County, PA will demonstrate “Inside-Out Turning” at our next meeting April 10th.

Michael, from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has exhibited in several US shows, including Challenge V: International Lathe Turned Objects Show, and the National Speleological Society’s Fine Art Salon. He turned an ornament for the Clinton White House during the “Year of the Craft.” Michael has won awards in many art shows and craft shows locally and nationally, including several Best of Show awards. He has also judged several wood carving shows and has written for the American Woodturner and the Journal of the American Association of Woodturners. Active in both local and national turning and carving clubs, he also demonstrates and teaches both woodcarving and woodturning in his studio. Michael has been turning and carving for 27 years and is self-taught.

Michael’s AAW Journal article “Turn Your Christmas Inside Out” is published in the Fall 1991 issue, which is in he club’s library.

For further information about Michael, see his website at:

Mark Your Calendars!

September 07 Demonstration

We are indeed fortunate to have arranged for William Smith, a world-class turner from eastern PA, to demonstrate “Segmented Turning” at our September meeting.

More information about William will come later, but for those who are interested, the website for this world class turner, demonstrator, teacher, and author is:  www.smitharts.us  At least visit his gallery to see his wonderful work!

On Demonstrations and Learning

Almost without exception, every excellent or world class turner we have encountered  at demos, symposia, or craft and art shows, has partly learned his (her) craft by attending a turning class at least once, mostly more, during their turning career.  I mention this because our club is actively trying to improve its program by (1) having more demonstrators, both by outside demonstrators and by club members, (2) providing more “hands-on” training at our meetings, and (3) improving the library to include more instructional materials (more about this later).

WE NEED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN! and we can by each of you letting us know what you want or need.  In the past year, we have had only one person asking for specific training (thank you, Tom), but I’m sure most of you would like to know more about SOME aspect of turning…let us know!  Also, we need participation in the “hands-on” stuff… nobody begins turning as an expert, so there’s no reason to feel afraid to show you don’t know how to do something.

The current tentative plan for our 10 meetings per year is to have 3 outside demonstrators, 3 member demos, and 2 or 3 “hands-on sessions.  We also would like to have “show and tell” and challenge presentations only on non demo nights.  YOU LET US KNOW if this will work to make the club better.

The Woodworking Show

This year’s show was the best for us ever!  The booth was almost continuously attended by show goers, a lot of the time crowded; at least one lathe was always operating; the members in the booth looked like a club with nice club-logo shirts (thanks Russ for the design); there were a lot of really nice turned pieces on display to attract the crowd; and best of all, we’ll probably get a couple of new members from the show.  Thanks to all who helped!

As an additional comment about the show, I’d like to thank and acknowledge Woodline USA’s Wayne Sutter, a principle in the company, for his generous support of our club.  He has donated various items in the past to show his appreciation for our “volunteering with no profit motive” to support woodworking.  I have purchased stuff from the company and can say the products are great and he stands behind everything he sells.  Check them out at www.woodline.com

Upcoming Shows & Symposiums

1.  Yankee Woodturning Symposium June 1-3, 2007 in Middletown, CT on the campus of Wesleyan University.  This is the first of a planned continuing symposium, and will feature world class demonstrators such as:

            Jimmy Clewes

            Jean-Francois Escoulen

            Michael Hosaluk

            Beth Ireland

            Johannes Michelsen (hat man)

            Bob Rosand

            Mark Sfirri

            Mark StLeger

            and others plus local turners.

The symposium is sponsored by a consortium of 7 New England turning clubs.  The registration fee is $135.00 before May 1st, and includes the demos, a trade show, and an instant gallery.  For further information and lodging options, see their website at:  www.yankeewoodturningsymposium.org

2.  AAW 2007 Woodturners’ Symposium will be held this year in Portland Oregon June 29-July 1.  Further information and registration materials are available at the AAW’s website at:  www.woodturner.org  Registration is $275.00 before May 15th.

3.  Totally Turning 2007 Symposium will be held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY on October 13-14, 2007.  Program and registration information is not yet set, but you can check their website at:  www.totallyturning.com

4.  Tylersport Turning & Carving Fair in Tylersport, eastern PA was held March 2-4, 2007 in Tylersport, PA.  This has been a very successful event, and is planned for about the same time next year.  This is still the best bargain in turning, since there were (and will be) top area demonstrators such as Michael Kehs (coming to a club near you this month) and William Smith (coming here in September).  Registration has continued to be only $5.00 a day, so keep this on in mind for next year.

Club Shirts

It looks like our club shirts have been a success, since there is a demand for more.  So…we need to order more in lots of 6 or more.  We now have an order pending, but I won’t put it in until after the meeting, so if you want one (or more), let me know at the meeting ($17.00 each).

AAW/Local Club Insurance

As you may know, the AAW provides liability insurance for its members and local AAW Chapter clubs, of which ASWT is one. This insurance provides coverage for members (and chapters) who are participating in chapter activities or chapter sponsored activities.

However…club members who are not members of the AAW are NOT COVERED or protected by this policy, even during a club sponsored activity.  Also, club members (AAW members or not) who are participating in private activities are not covered.

Just another benefit of joining AAW.

Club Roster Update

Our club roster needs to be updated and we need your help…Please check your information on the website and let me know if there are any changes needed.  I will also have copies at the meeting so you can check then as well.  When all is updated, it will be posted in the members section of our website:  www.atlanticshorewoodturners.com

Upcoming Penmaking Class

Lee Alexander will be teaching a class on Basic Penmaking on Saturday, April 28, 2007, from 2 PM to 6 PM at his house: 125 Manor Parkway,  Lincroft, NJ. For more information, contact Lee at: (732) 741-0156 or go to: http://www.dreamweaverdesignsinc.com/classes.htm.

I have attended some of Lee’s classes and can tell you they are very well taught with a maximum class size of about six.

The Wood Turning Center

Our club is now a sponsor of The Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia.

The center is an art and educational institution whose mission is the growth, encouragement and enhancement of individuals creating art from wood and other materials with a primary focus on turned and carved wood objects, and the appreciation of such art.

From now until May 19th, the center is highlighting an exhibit “Coming of Age:  Emerging and Established Wood Artists”  In addition to numerous up and coming artists, the exhibit showcases such established ones like Mark Sfirri, Richard Raffan, Betty Scarpino, and 18 others.

For further information, see their website at:  www.woodturningcenter.org

The Program Committee

Our program committee has been set up for the purpose of planning and arranging meeting programs for the club.   If you have any suggestions for a demonstration, instruction, or anything else, let the committee know.

Also, if any of you wish to help on the committee, come on down!
