March Meeting

Tom Jones Demonstration

This month’s meeting will feature a demonstration by Tom Jones of our own woodturners club.  He will show us how to turn miniature turnings such as hats, vessels, and even lidded boxes!

Along with showing us how to mount,

turn, and finish the tiny pieces, Tom will show us how to make the small specialized tools needed to turn the pieces.

Tom is our vice president and the master of our website.  He has been turning about eight years and a member of the club for the past four years.  He is an accomplished turner, and has been recently been focusing on miniature pieces.

If you visit our website and look through the members’ gallery, the photos you’ll see are taken by Tom.

This should be a fun demo, one which can be done by our members who only have a mini lathe (no more just pens).

Future Club Activities

The April meeting will be a regular meeting with Show & Tell and possibly a return of “the challenge”.

We still will have meetings in May & June, and we are trying to line up one more outside demonstrator this year…we’ll let you know.

As always, if anyone has any suggestions or topics for meetings, tell us.  Let us know if there’s any interest in one of the remaining meetings being devoted to open turning.

Tylersport Turning Fair

Unfortunately, most of you missed this year’s Tylersport Turning Fair in PA.  This has to be the best bargain in turning, when you consider that three of the featured artists in the current issue of the AAW Journal’s article “The Sphere” are featured…and participated in Tylersport:  Will Smith, Michael Kehs and Derek Weidman.  You recall we have had Will Smith and Mike Kehs as demonstrators here.  Also, Mark Anderson made his demonstrating debut at the fair.  He showed the folks there how to use the Jameson system for deep hollowing.  Not only did Mark demo at the fair, he entered the turning competition and won second place, finishing behind only Will Smith…Nice job Mark!

Keep early March open next year…all that for only $5 a day!

Upcoming Shows & Symposiums

2008 AAW National Symposium will be held in Richmond, VA June 20 - 23, 2008 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.  The demonstrators and programs are basically set and are described in the current AAW Journal and on the AAW website:

www.woodturner.org

If any of you are planning to attend, consider registering soon, since this symposium really grows every year (Louisville in 2006 grew so much from previous years that the hotel and symposium site was nearly overwhelmed).

The Woodturning Center in Philadelphia, PA has scheduled several in-house exhibits for 2008.  Our club now holds a membership at the center, which has as its mission the education, preservation and promotion of wood and wood-turned art.  For further information, visit their website at:

www.woodturningcenter.org

The Woodworking Show

This year’s Woodworking Show was held February 15 -17 in the Garden State Expo Center in Somerset.  Our participation keeps getting better, in terms of the numbers of members attending, the amount of time the lathes are actually being used, and the number of people stopping by the booth.

We also looked quite professional with our new banner.  Thanks to Tom, who kept after the printer to do it right (three times) and finally approved it about four hours before the show opened!

The show was under new management this year, and they wanted to try something new called “Strolling Mini Demonstrations” each lasting about 15 minutes or so, but I guess it didn’t work out…maybe next year.  One thing we are now able to do is sell our work at the booth.

What remains to determine if the show was a real success is whether we get any new members.  We’ll see.

The ASWT HOW Program

We are in the process of starting our own HOW (Hands On Workshop) program.  This effort is being led by Russ Bertelsen, who welcomes suggestions and comments.  He can be reached by e-mail at rberte7777@aol.com or talk to him at the March meeting.

HOWs first course:  Learn to Turn

This Hands-On-Workshop is designed for beginners or those wanting a refresher on the basics.  The course will emphasize lathe safety and operation, selection, sharpening and use of basic woodturning tools, wood preparation, turning techniques, shaping, sanding and finishing.  Typical beginner projects will be bowls, boxes and small platters.  Donation Fee $35.00, 1 Day.

Time, date & location to be set shortly.

The Program Committee

Our program committee has been set up for the purpose of planning and arranging meeting programs for the club.   If you have any suggestions for a demonstration, instruction, or anything else, let the committee know.

The Website

For those of you who haven’t recently visited, take a new look!  The calendar is right up to date with all sorts of interesting things, and the members’ gallery is chock full of great photos of OUR work.  The site is continually getting better…thanks Tom.  To submit news, calendar items, or photos, contact Tom at:
