Members' Websites:

Nearby Woodturning Groups:

  • The American Association of Woodturners - Top on our list of links has to be the AAW.  The parent of all other groups. All members of our club should also be a member of the AAW. Their site is a wealth of knowledge. Be sure to check them out.
  • The New Jersey Woodturners - Our sister club in North Jersey,  meets at 7:30 on the fourth monday of each month. You can check out their schedule here.
  • The Cape Atlantic Woodturners - Another nearby club,  representing south-east jersey, meets in Egg Harbor, NJ, on the third Tuesday of each month.
  • Delaware Valley Turners - a club organized for wood turners in the Delaware Valley. Members typically come from Southern and Central New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania including Philadelphia, and Northeastern Delaware. The club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month except for July and August, in Haddonfield, NJ. Click  here for further schedule details.
  • The Bucks Woodturners - Not very close, but certainly worth paying attention to. Representing south eastern Pa. Their meetings are on the third monday of each month, except July and August.
  • The Lehigh Valley Woodturners - 2 hours away, this club meets in the Woodcraft store, on Lehigh St, in Allentown, Pa. They meet on the 4th tuesday of each month. With members like Bill Grumbine and Will Smith, this club is worth the trip!

Woodturning Supplies:

  • Arizona Silhouettes - The self proclaimed: "Suppliers of Eye Candy"; a pretty decent supplier of pen and bottlestop making supplies, among other things. Be sure to check them out.
  • Augums Pen Works - located in Mission Hills, Ca.
  • Berea Hardwoods - located in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. A manufacturer of quality pen kits, and retailer of exotic hardwoods.
  • BG Artforms - Another catalog order provider, located in Bensalem, PA. This company is run by Barry Gross, somone who is doing a great job establishing himself as one of the most knowledgeable names in pen turnings. He has 2 books out on the subject (details available on his website). Check out his gallery, to see some very impressive pens!
  • Craft Supplies, USA. Probably the most comprehensive woodturner supply store, located in Provo, Utah. Also a great resource for training. Club members qualify for monthly specials. Click here for woodturner club members, and here for penturning group members.
  • Hut Products - located in Fulton, Mo.
  • Klingspor's Woodworking Shop - Located in Hickory, NC. Good selection of tools and supplies, with some woodturning items. A great source for sandpaper and sanding supplies.
  • Lee Tree Woodworks - located in Atlanta, Georgia. They claim to have the largest selection of Australian burls on the east coast.
  • Lee Valley & Veritas - Located in Ogdensburg, NY. This is one of my favorite suppliers - their items are high quality, inexpensive, and very unique, including many woodturning related items.
  • Monteath Lumber - located in Old Bridge, NJ. another distributor of domestic and exotic hardwoods.
  • Packard Woodworks - located in Tryon, North Carolina.
  • Penn State Industries - A smaller supply house, but offering a large selection of woodturning supplies. Located in Philadelphia, Pa.
  • Rockler Woodworking and Hardware - Located in Medina, MN. A good source for tools and hardware of all kinds, including some woodturning supplies and tools.
  • Steebar - A small, catalog order provider in NJ. Also sells pen making supplies.
  • US Mahogany - located in Matawan, NJ, a distributor of domestic and exotic hardwoods.
  • Wood Chips - This site is new to me, but it features an online store that sells woodturning paraphernalia, and features a different woodturner each month.
  • Woodcraft - A chain of 70 stores, selling a large variety of woodworking supplies, including some for woodturning. Woodcraft offers courses on many aspects of woodworking, including several aspects of woodturning, at a reasonable price. 
  • Woodline USA - While not truly a woodturning supply store, Woodline USA is a great source for many woodworking tools, such as router bits and bandsaw supplies. Wayne Sutter, a principle in the company, has been a generous support of our club in the past, and worthy of our support in return.

Shows and Events:

  • February 19 - 22, 2010 - The Woodworking Show will be held at the Garden State Exhibit Center, in Somerset, NJ. Our club will have a booth at the event, as usual. Please note that this year, Craft Supplies WILL NOT be there. Also, there will be a “Showoff” contest open to any attendee of the show (us too) with a grand prize of a Delta Unisaw.  See the website for details.

  • March 27, 28, 2010 - Totally Turning, 2010 will be held in Saratoga Springs, NY. This symposium will be a part of “Showcase” which is a very large and excellent woodworking symposium.  Attendees will have full access to both Totally Turning and Showcase.  There will be World class demonstrators there, including David Ellsworth, Kurt Herzog, and Jean-Francois Escoulen.  For more information, visit their website.  

  • June 18 - 20, 2010 - This year's AAW National Symposium will be the weekend of June 18th to 20th, 2010 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.  Details such as the demonstrator list and the topics for special interest night are not yet set, but will be posted on the AAW website at:  http://woodturner.org/   If you are thinking of attending, Register early and even earlier for hotel reservations, as close-by rooms disappear quickly.

Woodturning Discussion Groups:

  • Yahoo Groups - TurningAndTalking - a moderated discussion group, discussing all aspects of woodturning. What makes for an interesting twist; when people post comments, they get emailed to all the group members. There is a gallery for posting pictures to share. Requires registering.
  • Yahoo Groups - Penturners - Another moderated Yahoo discussion group, focused on penturning.
  • Yahoo Groups - Turnsmall - One more moderated Yahoo discussion group, this one focused on turners who make miniture items on the lathe.
  • EZBoard Woodturning Central - another discussion group, with lots of topic areas. You can create your own topic, or join in on one of the ones already being discussed. Requires registering.
  • Woodcentral.com - a great site, offering a wealth of resources on many topics related to woodworking in general, including several specific to turning. There are also several bulletin boards you can check out.
  • Wood Magazine's woodturning forum
  • Woodworking Australia's Woodwork Forums - a bunch of discussion groups on turning topics, among other things, from the land down under.
  • The Pen Shop - a relatively new site, devoted mostly to pen making and related topics.

Woodturning Reference Sites:

  • youTube has lots and lots of streaming videos on woodturning, sharpening, and other related topics, including this section, containing lots and lots of videos posted by the AAW.
  • Introduction To Woodturning - an online eBook teaching the basics of woodturning. This can be viewed online, or downloaded as a pdf file.
  • The Woodworking Channel - the world's first website dedicated to delivering the very best woodworking content from around the world-- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • Woodturning with Brian Clifford - Tons of information. Definately worth taking a peak.
  • The Able Workshop - resource for disabled woodworkers
  • Information on Drying Wood - an excellent site with info about moisture content and drying wood.
  • Robert Rosand has an excellent site, with links to several articles he's written.
  • Here's a GREAT table, listing information about just about every lathe made.
  • YouTube has a few videos on woodturning, like this one on Turning a Box, by Joe Bazer.
  • Smithart.us - Will Smith, who demonstrated for our club in September, 2007, has a great site with tons of resources, useful for turning open-segmented items. Be sure to checkout "Downloads & Misc".
  • Segmented Turning - A website devoted to segmented woodturning and associated resources (NOTE: Not associated with Will Smith).
  • MitreMaster - Ever need to calculate what angles you need to cut compound angles? Here's a great site that makes this easy! (ie, suppose you want to make an 8 sided flower pot, that flares up from the bottom to the top. What angle would you cut those boards?)
  • Here's a site that has pretty much everything you could ever want to know about dust collection.
  • Be sure to check out Wood Magazine's website. Among other things, they have an extensive set of tool reviews, including this review of mid-sized lathes. They also have a great wood reference list with information about many types of wood; both domestic and exotic.
