Welcome to the Atlantic Shore Woodturners' website!

Our group meets ten times a year, on the second Tuesday of each month (excluding July and August), at the Holy Family Parish Center (the white building at the corner of East County Line Road (Rt. 526) and Ridge Ave.), in Lakewood, NJ. [MAP]

Visitors and perspective members are always welcome at our meetings. Whether you're an experienced woodturner, or just someone who is interested in turning, you'll be sure to find something of value at our meetings.

Feel free to browse our website. However, the Members area is restricted to club members only. That's where all the good stuff is hidden. So you'll have to join the club to find out what's there!

Next Meeting:

Ahhh! Summer. The building where we have our meetings is closed for the next two months, so our next meeting isn't until September 14, 2010. But  that doesn't mean you can't turn! Get together with some of the other members. If you have a mentor, spend time with them. Or even, practice alone. But take advantage of the great weather, and turn, turn, turn! See you in September!!!!

Special Notices:

Sadly, our club Vice President and Librarian, Ismael Tuazon, has announced that he is resigning from both positions. Tom Swain has offered to take over both positions, and the change is effective immediately. We extend our thanks to Ismael, and wish him well. And we also extend thanks to Tom Swain for stepping up to the plate!

Tom Jones posted a new article on the Tips page, in the Members Only Area. The article discusses different ways to cut logs. Members can access it here: http://www.atlanticshorewoodturners.com/members/tips/CuttingLogs.htm. Remember, all members are encouraged to write articles like this, to help share your special knowledge and wisdom. Don't worry about formatting; write it in Word, and send it to Tom, and he'll do the formatting for you!

A new chapter of the AAW that's devoted to Segmented Turning has been formed. They have officers, bylaws, and the web site at www.segmentedwoodturners.org has been significantly upgraded to include features appropriate to a new group (gallery, forum, links, membership). There are many benefits to joining the group. But even if you don't join us at this time, feel free to check out the website, as it will be a place to get ideas for new projects of your own.

The AAW's membership drive is still going on. Look here for a list of the benefits you get by joining, or to renew or join. And here's a new video on youTube, discussing the benefits.

Speaking of AAW benefits! The AAW now has all of the back issues of the American Turner magazing posted in the Members' Only area of their website. There are thousands of wonderful articles, at your fingertips. But you have to be a member to access them. The AAW has also posted lots of woodturning-related videos on youTube, which are available to everyone (even non-members).

You Just Missed:

We had a full day demo by Kurt Hertzog at John Puckhaber's shop on June 12, 2010. Kurt is a world-renowned expert on pen-turning, as well as many other aspects related to turning. If you're not familiar with Kurt, he is a frequent contributor to Woodturning Design magazine, and an AAW board member. You can see examples of his work at http://kurthertzog.com. At this demo, he discussed things like sharpening, mastering the skew, methods for mounting items on the lathe, and ways to make your pens unique.  In case you missed it, Tom video taped the demo, and will be burning it to DVD in the near future.
