Welcome to the Atlantic Shore Woodturners' website!

Our group meets ten times a year, on the second Tuesday of each month (excluding July and August), at the Holy Family Parish Center (the white building at the corner of East County Line Road (Rt. 526) and Ridge Ave.), in Lakewood, NJ. [MAP]

Visitors and perspective members are always welcome at our meetings. Whether you're an experienced woodturner, or just someone who is interested in turning, you'll be sure to find something of value at our meetings.

Feel free to browse our website. However, the Members area is restricted to club members only. That's where all the good stuff is hidden. So you'll have to join the club to find out what's there!

Next Meeting:

Our February 9, 2010 meeting should be a fun one. Once again, we'll be dragging out our lathes for a night of open turning. We've had requests for some hands-on bowl turning and basic hollowing. We'll also have a lathe where we can work on skew skills and other types of spindle work. And, we'll have the sharpening system set up, so we can not only sharpen your tools, but teach you to do it yourself!  The club challenge is inside-outside turning. The older members, should remember that Mike Kehs demo'd how to do this back in April, 2007. For the new members, do some research on the web. It's pretty easy to do, and the results can be spectacular when done right! (check out club Treasurer, Stan Leibowitz's candle stand, in the gallery)

The Atlantic Shore Woodturners club now has a presence on Facebook! Check us out. If you like, add us to your friends list!

The annual Woodworking Show will be held February 19-22, 2010 at the Garden State Exhibit Center, in Somerset, NJ. Our club will have a booth at the event, as usual. Please note that this year, Craft Supplies WILL NOT be there. They have asked us to continue the pen-turning lessons at our booths, so we will have a lathe set up in our booth where we will work with attendees, teaching them to turn pens. Also, there will be a “Showoff” contest open to any attendee of the show (us too) with a grand prize of a Delta Unisaw.  See the website for details.

The 9th annual Tylersport Woodcarving and Turning Fair is being held March 5 - 7, 2010, from 10am - 5pm Friday and Saturday, and 10am - 4pm Sunday. This is a wonderful show that's reasonably close to us, and well worth the trip. The location is the Tylersport Fire House, Pa Route 563, Tylersport, Pa. (3.2 miles south of Rt 309).

The AAW is conducting a survey that they would like you to participate in. It only takes a few minutes, and will help determine the direction of things like the AAW itself, the annual symposiums, the American Woodturner Journal, and more. Take a few minutes, and take the survey. The world will be a better place as a result (at least, the world of woodturning!)

A new chapter of the AAW that's devoted to Segmented Turning has been formed. They have officers, bylaws, and the web site at www.segmentedwoodturners.org has been significantly upgraded to include features appropriate to a new group (gallery, forum, links, membership). There are many benefits to joining the group. But even if you don't join us at this time, feel free to check out the website, as it will be a place to get ideas for new projects of your own.

The AAW's membership drive is still going on. Look here for a list of the benefits you get by joining, or to renew or join. And here's a new video on youTube, discussing the benefits.

Speaking of AAW benefits! Be sure to check out all the woodturning-related videos the AAW has posted on youTube.

You Just Missed:

Our January 12, 2010 meeting was a big success! First off, we were able to keep the business portion short - approximately 35 minutes. Which was only a few minutes over the promised 30 minute deadline. Not bad for the first try. We had the club challenge of turned ornaments, and there were lots of entries! Great work, gang! Then, we had show & tell, and again, there were an awful lot of wonderful pieces to be shown off. Check out the latest updates in the Gallery pages to see what I mean!
